7 Ways to Prevent Motion Sickness …

I don’t like anything that makes me feel nauseous. Fortunately I never had to experience severe morning sickness when I was pregnant; otherwise I don’t think I would have enjoyed my pregnancy as much as I did! When it comes to motion sickness, I try very hard to find ways to avoid it at all costs. Here are 7 ways to prevent motion sickness in a vehicle.

7. Have fresh air circulating as much as possible

Open the window or turn the vent dial to ‘cool’ to allow some brisk air to circulate past you. A lot of the times this changing out of stale air is all you need to quickly feel better when you start to feel slightly sick in a vehicle.
6. Sit in the front seat of the vehicle

I always get nauseous in the backseat of a car, no matter who is driving. Either I have to drive or sit in the front passenger seat in order to keep from getting car sick. It doesn’t matter how hard I try to watch the road ahead of me, I still feel motion sickness set in if I’m in the backseat.

5. Chew on a piece of candied ginger

Ginger by itself will settle most cases of upset stomach. It is rather bitter thought, so I prefer to have a small container of sugar coated ginger in the glove box. The candied ginger usually comes in large pieces. I cut up a few large pieces into bits the size of Tic Tacs and keep these in the glove box for cases of motion sickness.

4. Suck on a peppermint candy

Unless you are able to make yourself a cup of mint tea, sucking on a peppermint candy is the next best thing. The traditional striped candy circles are my favorite. If I don’t have any of these, then the tin of Altoids is my next option. Altoids might be a bit strong for some people’s taste.

3. Don’t read while traveling along winding roads

All I have to do is glance down at a magazine or a book for a couple of seconds and I start to feel sick to my stomach. I had a similar experience while on a sailboat trying to navigate with a map. I now know that reading anything at all is completely out of the question while the car is moving. Or boat for that matter!

2. Keep your eyes on the horizon
This tip sort of follows along the lines of ‘no reading’ in the car. Watching the road ahead of you seems to work well for curbing motion sickness, whether you are in a vehicle or on any other moving object. Keeping an eye on the road helps you to know when the car is going around a corner and in which direction. You’ll be able to keep your body in a position that will prevent your stomach from being jostled unknowingly in every direction.

1. Take Dramamine

I’ve taken this medicine for preventing motion sickness and found it to be some amazing stuff! I never felt sick at all during the entire trip. On the other hand, I did feel a bit sleepy and ended up sleeping on and off during the car ride. I would much rather be sleepy on a trip in the car than feeling car sick the entire time.
