7 Top Money Tips For Teens …

Preparing teenagers for the day that they move out is not easy – they have to learn about finances, how to look after a house and generally what it’s like to be an adult. One of the ways that you can start out on the journey is to introduce them to some money tips for teens that will help them to understand the value and importance of money for later in life. If you’re stuck and would like to know exactly what to teach them, read on for my 7 Top Money Tips for Teens.

1. Start saving at a young age

As a teenager it can be easy to think about putting off saving money. When your financial income is limited, you will want to spend every penny that you have on the latest CD or pair of jeans; however if you were to save money from a young age, you could build up some real cash for when you’re older.
An example is this: if you save 78p a day when you are 13, increasing that to £4.47 a day when you are 25 and then £27 a day when you are 29, by the time you are 30 you will have a huge £10,000 cash in the bank to spend! If you manage to save more money from a young age, that £10k can build up even higher.

2. Are you getting the best deal?

One of the money tips for teens that is often overlooked is realizing that you should always find the best deal. If you purchase a CD in a shop for £10 that you could find online for £6, you are wasting £4 – that could be over an hour’s work that you have to do to pay the difference.

3. Turn down credit cards and overdrafts

Once you turn 18 you will be bombarded with marketing that encourages you to get a credit card or overdraft. Although the idea of having seemingly unlimited money to spend may be appealing at the time, the huge interest rates that you will incur if you are unable to pay the balance off will cripple you financially.
Top money tip: If you are going to get a credit card or overdraft on your bank account, make sure that you are in steady employment and have the means to pay off what you owe.

4. Consider the ‘minimum payments’

If you think that money lenders want you to pay them back, you are wrong. They want you to borrow from them for as long as possible so that you build up interest on what you owe – that is why they introduce ‘minimum payment’ schemes, where you are unable to pay off more than your monthly instalment.

5. Think about your pension

I know what you’re thinking: why on earth should I consider my pension as a teenager? Well the reason is simple: prior planning will lead you to have more money to fall back on when you are older. Investing small amounts into a pension plan can build up over time, so that when you hit retirement age you have a nice nest egg to fall back on. Of all the top money tips for teens, pensions is usually a subject oft overlooked.

6. Insurance excesses

Learning about insurance is one of the money tips for teens that is paramount. Insurance can be taken out on everything: cars, homes, lives, pets, the list is endless. However if you are not aware of the insurance excess rate, you may find yourself financially stuck. The excess is how much the insurance company expects you to pay towards the total cost – basically the amount that you have to pay before receiving a penny from your insurance provider. Check the small print!

7. Consider the risk carefully

Investing your money can be a great way to make some cash. Instead of having your money sitting in a low-interest bank savings account, you may want to invest your money in shares or even items of value (such as gold bars) depending on the amount you have to save. Always check with financial advisers before opting to invest your money, as the risks should always be carefully considered.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my list of 7 Top Money Tips for Teens and have found the points useful. Finding suitable money tips for teens to learn can be difficult and even frustrating, but you are doing the best thing you can; helping to prepare them for life as an independent adult. Please leave a comment if you have any additional tips or would like to share your experience teaching teenagers about money!

8 Reasons Why You Can’t Sleep at Night …

The long hours of night seem to last forever when you are suffering with a bad case of insomnia. Tossing and turning for hours at a time is a miserable way to spend your precious sleep time and the only thing worse than spending a night staring at the ceiling is trying to function the next day with no sleep. The key to beating insomnia is figuring out why you aren’t sleeping. Here are 8 reasons why you can’t sleep at night. Figure out which one is bothering you and then you can make practical changes to help sleep come easier.

1. You are Preoccupied with Work

Thinking about work can cause your mind to race at night. It adds stress to your body and your mind. Finding a way to relieve stress and give your mind a mental break from work before you go to bed at night may help you get to sleep faster and keep you asleep longer. Try making a “to do” for what you need to get done at the office before you go to bed. Organize your thoughts on paper and then you can rest easy knowing a plan is waiting on you in the morning.

2. You are Worried About Relationships

Your interactions with others can create added stress on your mind that can leave you restless and unable to sleep. If you are having conflict in your marriage or friendships, try to talk things out before you go to bed. When you are angry or upset, your emotions can keep you from getting a good night of rest so pick up the phone and make amends.

3. You are Stressed About Finances

Money is a huge culprit in sleepless nights. If you have past due bills, outstanding debts, or other financial issues, this can interfere with the ability to sleep. Spend some time working out a budget or seek help from a financial counselor. Even if you don’t have enough money to cover everything at once, making a plan will ease your mind and help your sleep habits.

4. You are in the Middle of Transition

Anytime you have a big change in your life you experience a transition that can effect your body. Whether taking a promotion, moving to a new home, or going off to college, life changes can afford you the opportunity of sleepless nights and dreary days. Try to create a schedule that helps you adjust to your new place in life. This will help your body adjust enough to sleep at night.

5. You are Grieving

Losing a loved one can put a great mental burden on your mind. While some resort to sleep to cope with grief, others become deprived of it. Grief counseling is important to allow you to work through your thoughts and feelings and help you to adjust your mind to resting again.

6. You Consume Too Much Caffeine

You could be keeping yourself awake at night by the foods and drinks you consume throughout your day. Your body needs a break from caffeine in order to shut down for rest at night. If you enjoy drinking coffee, consider drinking decaffeinated coffee in the evenings instead of your regularly loaded cup.

7. You Have Underlying Medical Issues

Sleeping disorders, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, injuries, pregnancy and more could be keeping you up at night. Talk with your doctor about what options may be available to help you get a good night’s sleep.

8. Your Partner is Keeping You Awake

If your sweetie is a snorer, it can make the nights like a ritual form of torture. If your sleep is interrupted by the other half of the bed, you have a few options. First, you could try sleeping alone. This isn’t always a great option for marriage though! Your other option is to try to help your partner stop snoring. Talk to a doctor or sleep specialist for advice!
Having a good night’s sleep is important for your body and your mind. Sleep gives your body rest and helps it to be mentally and physically alert to perform everyday tasks such as driving and working. If you are experiencing any of these 8 reasons why you can’t sleep at night, making some simple changes could really help. By taking time to wind down, avoiding late night caffeine, and taking care of health issues, you can improve your sleep. What is your best trick for unwinding before bed at night?
