There are all sorts of husbands, nice ones, naughty ones and nasty ones. Any kind has one unmistakably manly trait; they don’t really care about presents, giving or getting. Wives are usually particularly sensitive towards the idea of gifting in general. Having said that women can be rather stupid when it comes to choosing gifts for their husbands! So here are the 7 worst gifts to give to your husband – if any one of these made it to your list of “possible gifts for your anniversary, you know what to do. Cut it out as soon as you can and go back to brainstorming some ideas, hopefully better ones this time.

1. Pets

Your man may be a great animal lover and PETA supporter. But come on, giving him an animal simply adds to his already heavy burden of responsibilities. Loving animals and having one to look after full time are two very different things so don’t try and spring a surprise unless you know he’s ready for it. Also consider that pet care might eventually become one of your chores. I rest my case!

2. Hand-knitted Sweaters

Okay so you have recently taken up knitting. Desist from taking it out in the form of a sweater for your husband. Believe me, men do not croon over fluffy hand knitted sweaters, made worse if they have corny messages on them. A nice husband may appear delighted because of the effort that went into it, but they do not like sweaters. Period.

3. Celine Dion Music

You might be an odd one who is in love with the music of Celine Dion. Men were not, are not and will never be into her music. So don’t go out of your way to put together specially mixed CD of Dion tracks. That gift is going to sit at the bottom of a drawer in his tool shed and is therefore one of the worst gifts to give to your husband.

4. Clothes/Shoes that don’t Fit

Nothings says “you are quite insignificant” more than clothes and shoes that are simply not his size. Come on, you are married to him for goodness sake! How can you not know his size? He is simply not going to bother exchanging such gifts and it will be some time before you can live that down. Badly fitting clothes are definitely one of the worst gifts to give to your husband.

5. The Mangroomer

The Mangroomer is a fairly recent tool for grooming the man(ly). It helps men do away with hair on their backs without anybody’s assistance. Seriously now, why women would want a spouse with a smooth shiny back is beyond me. But whether women want it or not, almost all men hate the bizarre gadget. For centuries now men have been happy with the state of their backs and they see no reason to change that in this century.

6. You in a Frame

If you are actually planning to put a picture of you in a frame and gift wrap it as a surprise for hubby dear, you really need to get over yourself. He may be the most loving husband but he sees you every day, and there is nothing wrong if he wishes not to sometimes. Unless, the photo is something on the lines of eroticism…then you are talking about something absolutely different.

7. Gift Certificates

Another one of those worst gifts to give your husband is a gift certificate. These excuses for presents are meant for people we don’t really know very well. But getting one for your husband is a crime almost. Besides being totally impersonal, it is a very “husbandy” thing to do, don’t you think. Also, knowing how men think, he will probably forget about its existence and end up using it to buy you a gift.

Women are lovely sensitive creatures; we put a lot of thought into everything we do. So why slip up when it comes to gifting the men in our lives? Steer clear of these seven worst gifts to give to your husband, and you will never go wrong. We, after all, have an image to preserve, don’t we?

Let me make it clear at the outset that the gay icons on this list are not all gay themselves. They are here because of the influence they have had on gay people and the inspiration they have offered with the lives they have lived and the activism they have performed. For the entire previous century (and perhaps human history) gay people have been a persecuted minority in the world, and the fear of ridicule and repression forced them into a narrow closet, with their sexuality a well guarded secret. These are the among the gay icons who have liberated them.

1. Martina Navratilova

She is not only one of the greatest tennis players of all time, but also one of the greatest gay icons. She came out with her lesbian sexuality in 1981 during the peak of her career, at a time when thousands of gay people were dealing with repression, silence and ridicule. In an age that was being hailed for its liberalism, she opened a can of worms, and took all the criticism and antagonism that came her way chest on. For the spirit with which she fought and held herself and her sexuality proudly, she will remain as one of the greatest icons for the gay community.

2. Nelson Mandela

Surprised? Nelson Mandela is an image of a man who will not bow down to suppression, no matter what. He fought hostility most of his life and came out a winner. It is this message that gay people identify with and take to heart

3. Sandi Toksvig

Sandi Toksvig, a popular presenter, comedian and author of Danish descent, was the first woman in the media who came out as a lesbian. This was once again in the troubled period of the 80s and 90s, and she had to face the same barrage of antagonism as Martina Navratilova did. Sandi even faced death threats but she says that she felt much better for having come out. Since then she has been a noteworthy champion of gay rights.

4. Sir Ian Mckellen

Sir Ian Mckellan came out publicly in 1988, on BBC Radio, and since then he has been one of the most vocal and active LGBT rights’ campaigners in the world. At the same time, he is recognized as one of the most distinguished talents in acting, and is honored and respected wherever he goes. He was even knighted well after he came out. For gay people, this goes to show that coming out does not necessarily mean that one is trading respect for ridicule.

5. Madonna

Madonna is one of the greatest popular gay icons in the world. She was one of the first women to acknowledge bisexual tendencies, and rather than presenting herself as a martyr for the cause, she made it appear cool and sexy for women to be bisexual. With her charm and pop charisma, only she could have done it that way. She went on to appear in photographs and music videos, openly sharing her sexuality with naked women and enjoying herself. She has even been a very vocal spokesperson and activist for gay people.

6. Judy Garland

Judy Garland is a gay icon mostly for all the struggles and pressure that she has faced in her life. A lot of gay people identify with the pattern of repression, rebellion, depression and strength that was so evident in Judy Garland’s life. Even in the 50s and 60s, popular media insultingly and disparagingly noted the influence that Garland had with the closet homosexuals of the time.

7. Harvey Milk

Harvey Milk is referred by many as the Martin Luther King of gay people. He was the first gay person to be elected to office, and this was back in the 70s, when being gay meant that you were mentally ill and a bad influence for children. Milk openly fought for complete rights and equality for gay people, and went on to have a significant influence on the politics of his time. He was shot dead by a political adversary in ’78, and is now glowingly regarded as a martyr.

There are several other gay icons, and there will continue to be for a long time to come. Till gay people are openly and fully accepted into the fabric of law and society, they will continue to seek inspiration from people who have had to fight great odds. Of course, it is not always possible for you to look your best. But, there are many reasons why it is worth the effort you make to look great. Here is a list of 7 reasons to look your best at all possible times, in my opinion.

1. New life opportunities

There are many life opportunities that come by without knocking. For instance, you could meet the person of your dreams and fall in love at first sight. If such an opportunity were to present itself, wouldn’t you like to be sure that you looked your best?

2. New business opportunities

Just like life opportunities may present themselves unexpectedly, so can business or work opportunities. Who knows, you may be discovered as a new face by a prominent ad film maker. Or you may run into a guy who may be taking your interview the next day. Shouldn’t you be prepared for opportunities like these?

3. Increases your self esteem

One’s self esteem is largely dependent on one’s self image. If you have taken the trouble to groom yourself and look good, you are sure to feel good. There will be a bounce in your step that everyone is attracted to.

4. Other people’s reaction

Another one of the important reasons to look your best is that people unknowingly and subconsciously react to what they see. When they see a good looking person who is well groomed, they are sure to react and respond more positively.

5. Respecting the occasion

This is another of the important reasons to look your best. You need to look your best when you are in a social situation because that shows respect to the occasion you are a part of. This is just being well cultured.

6. Respecting the person

This is a matter of being well mannered. When you take the effort to groom yourself well, it shows that you are respectful of the company you are in. On the other hand, if you don’t take care of your appearance, the message that gets conveyed is that you don’t care about the opinion people may have of you because according to you their opinion means nothing.

Of course, like I said before there are more than these 7 reasons to look your best. But, it is a matter of things that are important to you. That is, of course, a subjective question. In my opinion, looking one’s best is a sign that you respect yourself, others around you and the situation you are in. So, don’t let yourself down.

Life does not always go the way you think it will. This book chronicles a girl’s realization when her father quits his job and starts selling vitamins at the mall. Suddenly, she is expected to help out financially. One top of that, she is trying to deal with a best friend who has seemingly abandoned her and a boy who she doesn’t like but can’t stop kissing. It’s a perfect mix of teenage angst and the classic coming of age emotions.

Piper does not seem like a likely band manager, after all she is deaf. Still, she is determined to give it all she’s got. John Greene is one of the few male authors who have ventured into the genre of young adult fiction. His quirky story about a high school boy will not only have you rolling on the floor laughing, but also make you stop and think about life and society.
