7 Ways To Emulate Elizabeth Taylor …

When the actress Elizabeth Taylor died recently, it seemed that an era had truly ended. Dame Elizabeth was an icon of the twentieth century, and even though her health had prevented her working much in recent years, her fame was as great as ever. Known as much for her colourful personal life as for her lengthy career, Elizabeth was certainly a strong and forceful personality. While we may not have her looks, there are many ways in which we can emulate Elizabeth Taylor …

1. Live Life With Passion

Nobody could ever accuse Dame Elizabeth of doing things by halves! Quite the opposite – here is one woman who lived life to the full. In every aspect of her life, whether it involved her career, charitywork or personal life, she put passion and energy into it. Follow in her footsteps, even if in a less grand way, and you will enjoy what you do.

2. Buy The Best

Massive diamonds and couture outfits might not be in our budgets, and I certainly wouldn’t advocate spending money you can’t afford to spend. However, we can learn a lesson from Elizabeth and apply it to a smaller extent. Buy quality when it’s worth doing so – look at vintage or resale shops, for example, or buy an occasional good bottle of wine instead of several bottles of cheap plonk.

3. Keep On Trying

As a divorcee, I am inclined to think once is enough, though I might be persuaded to consider a second marriage with the right man. I certainly wouldn’t clock up eight marriages! However, the lesson to learn here is that persistence can be positive, and there are certain circumstances where you shouldn’t give up.

4. Always Look Good

Even when confined to a wheelchair, and in spite of suffering several major health problems, Dame Elizabeth was never seen looking less than immaculate. Making an effort, even if you don’t feel like doing so, can have a positive effect on you. Just think how much brighter a simple act like putting on lipstick can make you feel.

5. Enhance Your Best Features

Think of Elizabeth Taylor, and you immediately see an image of her dark hair and those extraordinary eyes. Elizabeth knew what her best features were, and she used them to full effect. We all have something attractive about us, so play that up and don’t worry about what you don’t like about yourself.

6. Do Good

Elizabeth was very active when it came to charity work, and didn’t forget her charity in her will. We might not have millions to leave, but we can all do something to help other people. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture – help out a neighbour in need, or volunteer in whatever field you are interested in.

7. Hold Your Head Up

Despite the number of jokes made about her multiple marriages, you never saw any sign that it bothered Dame Elizabeth. Quite right, too! Don’t worry what other people think of you; hold your head up and don’t let other people get you down.
So you see, there are lots of ways in which you can emulate Elizabeth Taylor and adopt an aspect of her style or attitude. Are there any other stars you admire, whether they are contemporary or from the past, and what have you learned from them?

7 Celebrities Who Went into Rehab …

A lot of us envy celebrity lifestyles, with all their glamour, money and sexy style quotients. They are always there at the best parties, they walk the red carpet at the Oscars and they holiday onboard luxury cruise liners and on expensive private islands. But then, there is also the dark side. Show business is not easy business, and sorrow and torture lurk beneath some of the prettiest faces in the country. Drug abuse and alcoholism are rampant, and so are rehabilitation and the battle to fight these evils. Rehab does work, however, and some celebrities do manage to come out stronger. Here are 7 celebrities who went into rehab and famously fought off debilitating addictions.

1. Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore’s early life is testament to the potentially fatal consequences of stardom and fame, if it hits you too young. She was addicted to alcohol and drugs and had even tried to commit suicide, all before her 13th birthday. She went into rehab with little hope, but the story of her turnaround has been equally dramatic. She came out strong, fought off all those addictions and is now a strong and mature woman in control of her life.

2. Elton John

During the years ’89 and ‘90, Elton John spent an enormous amount of time in rehab clinics. His problems were cocaine and alcohol abuse, and he struggled to get over the addictions. He did manage to succeed, though, and in 1991 he declared that he was clean.

3. Ozzy Osbourne

The Black Sabbath singer’s bitter battle against alcoholism is nearly as famous as he himself is. According to him, it was his wife Sharon who tricked him into getting into rehab by telling him that the Betty Ford Centre had a bar and they would teach him how to drink properly! He promptly went in, expecting just that, and that’s how the battle began. He has remained committed to his struggle for over 25 years, and has slowly and surely cemented his grip over his life.

4. Whitney Houston

She is one of the biggest names amongst the almost endless list of celebrities who went into rehab. She was heavily addicted to drugs, including Cocaine and Marijuana, and she even admitted that she and her former husband, Bobby Brown, used to take drugs together. After a couple of trips to rehab clinics, she claims that she is now clean.

5. Robert Downey, Jr

His star has been on the rise for quite a while now, but there was a time when things were not looking so bright for Robert Downey, Jr. Between 1996 and 2001, constant drug abuse, arrests, rehab and then more abuse, had reduced his personal life and career to a complete mess, and many doubted if he would ever be able to pick himself up. He did, and how! There was never any doubt about his acting talent, and since 2001, he has honed it steadily without the distressing use of drugs. Thank God he was one of those celebrities who went into rehab!

6. Britney Spears

Britney Spears has borne a long and ugly struggle against drug and alcohol abuse and mental disorders. One of the most famous pop sensations of her generation, she found out just how traumatic the constant limelight can get. Just like the pinnacles of her success, the lowest and worst moments of her private life were showcased by media around the world. People around her reportedly took advantage of her, and saw her all the way down to almost total breakdown. However, she seems to have come out of the worst, and now has much better charge of her life and career.

7. Ben Affleck

The multitalented and gorgeous looking Ben Affleck completes this list of celebrities who went into rehab. Alcohol abuse was his trouble and in 2001, he checked into the Promises rehab centre in Malibu, which has treated many celebrities over the years, including Robert Downey, Jr. and Charlie Sheen. Ben claimed to have successfully gotten over his addiction, but he was pictured with a drink again in 2010. He is still struggling, but has reportedly managed to conquer his nemesis.
This list of celebrities who went into rehab is by no means total. One could go on with a hundred or more famous names who have battled addictions at some stage or the other. This is only a glimpse into what seems to be the most frequently recurring theme in the world of high profile actors and musicians: the struggle against drug and alcohol abuse. What celebrities do you know that went into rehab and got out stronger?

7 Reasons I Love Barbie …

Since her arrival in 1959, Barbie has been everywhere and done everything, from including careers as a babysitter to a veterinarian, airline pilot to Olympic figure skater. She’s gorgeous, sweet, smart… everything little girls could possibly want to be. Sure, she’s dealt with her share of controversy, but I adore Barbie, and I’m not afraid to admit it. Here are 7 reasons I love Barbie.

1. She has EVERYTHING!

Barbie has worn designer gowns designed by Calvin Klein and Vera Wang. She drives a pink Corvette and a Jeep. She has lots of exotic pets, including a panda and a zebra. Is there anything this girl doesn’t have? Call me commercial and materialistic and shallow, but who wouldn’t want to be Barbie for a day?

2. She’s kind-hearted

Barbie is sweet and kind-hearted, almost to a fault. I’ve only ever seen her stick up for herself in the latest movie, “A Fairy Secret.” She’s kind, courteous, sweet, accepting, and helpful. Wouldn’t she make a great bestie?

3. She’s super-smart

There’s no way Barbie could be a fashion model, airline pilot, astronaut, doctor, and NASCAR driver if she wasn’t brilliant. There was some scandal in 1992 when she was quoted as saying “math class is tough!” but she obviously worked through it, graduated high school, and moved on to several rewarding smart-girl careers.

4. She’s single… still!

In 2004, Barbie and her long-term boyfriend, Ken Carson, broke up. They’d been dating since 1961, and though she’s not afraid of commitment, Barbie just didn’t want to settle. She’s happy being single… and besides, Australian surfer-boy Blaine is kind of interesting… I love that Barbie isn’t the typical Disney Princess, with her heart set on marriage by the age of 16.

5. She has a career (LOTS of careers) she loves

I’ve mentioned Barbie’s numerous rewarding careers. I’d love to be a pilot or a flight attendant, a NASCAR driver (ala Danica Patrick) or a doctor… but Barbie is all of these things, and more. Say what you will about her setting unrealistic body images, but in regards to career choices, I think Barbie is a great role model for little girls who, in the past, may not have considered these as career choices.

6. She’s not a Bratz doll

I loathe the Bratz dolls. They look like tiny prostitutes! Even their TV commercials and animated shows make them appear trampy, long before their time. While Barbie is off baby-sitting, the Bratz are wearing thigh-high stockings and mini-skirts to school dances, and quite possibly, un-supervised parties after.

7. She’s stood the test of time

Barbie is more than 50 years old, but little girls the world over still love her. She’s timeless, and that’s another reason I adore her.

I know, I know… a lot of moms out there are shaking their heads, and possibly their fists at me right now, thinking that Barbie’s perfect bodily proportions are setting unrealistic standards for little girls, but neither me, my mother, my aunts, my cousins, my friends, or my daughters have ever held her up to real-life scrutiny, or compared her to our own bodies. And I really think in some ways, she’s a very good role model. Hate her or love her, she’s relevant, and will always have millions of fans and detractors. But I for one love her… and I’m not ashamed of it! Do you love or loathe Barbie? Why? Please share your thoughts!
