7 Things you Should Never Say in a Conversation

Social interactions are rift with faux pas and the proverbial “foot-in-the-mouth” situations. If we aren’t tongue-tied in an effort to think of smart and witty repartee, we usually end up saying the wrong thing at the wrong time at the wrong place. In retrospect, these blunders might seem amusing but the agony you undergo in that particular situation is no laughing matter. Although we can’t prepare you for all the silly errors you may end up making, here are 7 things you should never say in a conversation. And alongside that, the more appropriate thing you should.

1. “Oh my God! You’ve lost a lot of weight.”

Women usually welcome any indication that they’ve shrunk in size. However, when you put it like that you make it sound like you were almost shocked; as though something of earth-shattering cataclysmic proportions has happened. Did she really look that ugly before she lost weight?
A politer thing to say would be, “Wow, you look really great? What’s your secret?”

2. “I know this sounds stupid, but…”

When faced with a situation where we are required to advance ideas, we usually tend to undermine ourselves and word our suggestions in vague and wishy-washy phrases such as the one above. That’s definitely one of those things you should never say in a conversation.
Instead, be straightforward and say with conviction, “Why don’t we…” or “Perhaps we could…”

3. “I could never, ever wear that!”

Why? Because it’s too ugly? Or you’re too refined to be caught in anything so shoddy? If this comment can be misconstrued as a criticism, always clarify your statement with a reason. “I could never wear that mini skirt, coz I don’t have legs like yours.”

4. “I can’t talk to you right now.”

Be it at the work place or in your house, we rattle this sentence off without stopping to think how rude it might sound to the other person. It gives the impression that you are brushing someone off high-handedly unless you back it up with a gracious explanation.
What you could do is say, “I’m in the middle of something here. Can I talk to you when this is done?” or “Can you give me a few minutes?” This way you aren’t too brusque and the other person feels valued too.

5. “You’ve split up, huh? You were too good for him anyway.”

Or “I don’t know what you ever saw in that guy.” There are two reasons why this is one of those things you should never say in a conversation with a friend who’s recently parted ways with her boyfriend. One, you are indicating that she doesn’t have the ability to make sound judgments and two, it would put you in a really awkward spot, if they ever decided to get back together.
On a more diplomatic note, you could simply say, “His loss!” and leave it at that.

6. “I’m glad you broke up. I didn’t like him at all.”

While the earlier statement questioned your friend’s ability to choose the right guy, this one points a finger at your integrity and that’s just as bad. I mean, what kind of a two-faced person are you – pretending to like the guy when they were together and rushing to bitch about him that moment he’s out of sight? Better to put this on the list of things you should never say in a conversation!
Instead of whooping with joy that the dumb ass is out of her life, you should make her feel better about what’s to come in her life. Say something on the lines of, “Things will get better. Someone as lovely as you is sure to find a guy who’ll give you all that you are looking for in a relationship.”

7. “You Never…” or “You Always…”

Using absolute expressions like the ones mentioned above can put anybody on the defensive because you are pointing a long, bony, dirty finger at them. If the purpose of the argument is to play the blame game, go along, be my guest.
However, if you are looking to solve the problem, do not make it an all inclusive mud-slinging show. Move from “You always deliver your files late” to something more mature like, “I’m upset that you’re delivering late again. Can you please tell what we are going to do to fix this?”
I can think of plenty of other things you should never say in a conversation, but I am little cramped for space here so I might cover that in another post. The key to saying the right thing when speaking is to stop and think for one minute how this might affect the person in front of you. Better still, how would you feel if someone said the same things to you? If the answer to that is “Not very nice” you may want to rephrase the words coming out of your mouth. After all, we all want to get along with our fellow human beings and make a good impression, don’t we?

8 Reasons to Avoid Fast Food …

As far as I’m concerned, fast food really only has one advantage over home-cooked or restaurant food: it’s fast, hence the name, right? But other than that one quality, I really don’t like fast food (except for an innate weakness I have for Taco Bell), and here’s why… here are 8 reasons to avoid fast food.

1. It’s fattening

Reason number one for avoiding fast food: it’s fattening. Actually REALLY fattening. A Whopper 40 grams of fat. A Big Mac has 29 grams. For the sake of comparison, and in the pursuit of full disclosure: my entire lunch at Taco Bell (a bean burrito with sour cream and a cheese roll-up) has 22 grams of fat. That’s a LOT of fat, considering these aren’t total meals… most of us eat fries with our burgers, and those add a whopping 22 additional grams of fat — in other words, there are as many grams of fat in my entire Taco Bell meal as there are in just the fries… and we’re really only supposed to get, maximum, 195 fat or sugar calories a day… do the math! A Whopper has 40 grams of fat, which is 360 calories… ick!

2. It’s a lot of empty calories

While it’s true that some of the calories in fast food are from fiber and other “good” carbs, most are not, so they’re useless, or “empty” calories. Empty calories aren’t going to keep you full or help your body, so why bother?

3. It’s disgusting!

Let me be blunt, but gross: there is a certain amount of animal feces in your hamburger. A LOT of animal feces. When you hear of fast food tainted with E. Coli, that, my dear, is where it’s coming from — animal poop.

4. There aren’t a lot of fresh food choices

Most fast food restaurants offer apple slices (with sugar-laden caramel dipping sauce) or salads on their menu, but sadly that’s about the extent of their fresh food offerings. There are a few exceptions: Subway, for example, offers plenty of fresh food options, but, according to Eric Schlosser, author of “Fast Food Nation,” Subway is more concerned with selling franchises than food.

5. They have poor employment practices

Do you know why fast food places seem to hire so many teenagers? It’s because hardly anyone else wants to work in fast food, with the dismal hours, hard work, and low, low pay, most of the time without benefits. Add to the teenage (and thus slightly less reliable) work-force the fact that these restaurants get a tax break every time they hire a new employee, and you see why high job turnover is good for the fast food business, but maybe not so good for the economy.

6. They harm the environment

Massive feedlots, scores of polluting trucks, less-than-energy efficient stores… I’d say fast food isn’t quite as gentle as they could be on the environment. Granted, they’re not alone, but this is just another reason I avoid fast food.

7. They target children to form life-long “addictions”

In a way, I think it’s sick that McDonald’s, Burger King, and all of the other fast food chains target children. They’re trying to get them “hooked” on tasty, high-fat, high-calories, high-sugar foods, so they’ll be what the industry refers to as “heavy users” as adults. No pun intended. That’s really what frequent fast food customers are called.

8. Ronald creeps me out

Last and certainly not least, Ronald McDonald completely creeps me out. He’s a scary clown with blood-red paint on his face and a cheer that borders on manic. And the Burger King plastic guy? Yeah. He’s scary, too.
With so many reasons to avoid fast food, and only one good one I can think of to opt for it, I’m starting to eat at the cursedly addictive Bell less often, and at other fast food next to never. Do you love or loathe fast food? Why do you avoid it or adore it? Please share!

7 Possible Causes of Painful Sex …

If you are experiencing pain during intercourse, then it might be time to see a doctor. Your physician will be able to tell you if you need medical attention, can just take some over-the-counter medicine, or if you only need to change something about your lifestyle in general. Here are 7 possible causes of painful sex.

7. PID – Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

PID is one possible cause of painful sex. Besides pain during sex, this disease also includes a number of additional symptoms which can be present: chills, back pain, abdominal pain, a fever, vaginal discharge, and a rapid pulse. This disease can be treated with antibiotics. Surgery might be necessary in severe cases of PID. It’s important to get this disease diagnosed as soon as possible so as to eliminate the chance of any damage occurring to your reproductive system. PID can be transmitted sexually.

6. Vulvodynia

Experiencing a stinging and/or burning sensation during sex might possibly be due to this chronic condition of the vulva and vagina. Physicians still aren’t certain as to what causes vulvodynia, but they think it could be due to nerve damage, an elevated amount of oxalate crystals found in the urine, or an allergic response to something in the environment. This is a difficult condition to diagnose.

5. Vaginismus

This is the name of a condition where the vaginal muscles spasm so intensely that it makes it virtually impossible to have intercourse without pain. While this condition is the most severe cause of muscle spasms inside the vagina, stress can also cause these same muscles to tense up and make sex a painful experience.  This is a very worrisome possible cause of painful sex.

4. Vaginal dryness

The vaginal walls are usually lubricated on their own naturally during sex. The sex can be very painful when the walls lack any type of moisture. Lubricants are sold specifically for intercourse and can be applied topically before intercourse. Certain brands of condoms come pre-lubricated as well.

3. An allergic reaction

Allergies present another possible cause of painful sex. Some women are very sensitive to spermicidal jellies, the material some condoms are made from, or contraceptive foams. There is even a strong possibility that the allergy is to something that isn’t related to sexual intercourse, such as deodorant soap, a scented tampon, or a particular brand of laundry detergent. Go over all possible causes before you scare yourself into thinking your pain during sex is caused by something critical. It could be all you need to do is switch brands of soap.

2. Genital herpes

Open sores are often present when genital herpes are in full force. The pain felt during sex is due to these sores that appear during an outbreak. Since they aren’t present all the time, it might be a while before you are even aware you have genital herpes. Additional symptoms include a fever and swollen glands. Unfortunately genital herpes never goes away, but it will go into dormancy and make it less possible for your partner to get genital herpes as well.

1. Yeast infection

The inside of the vagina is very sensitive when there is an infection present. The most common pain experienced includes burning or stinging. Along with these symptoms, there is usually itching and a slight discharge present. You’ll need to go to your doctor to find out if it is a yeast infection for sure before you purchase over-the-counter medicine to get rid of it.
Any of these 7 possible causes of painful sex can make you think the worst about your situation. It’s hard to have an open mind when pain is being experienced. Do you know of any other issues that might cause pain during sex?

7 Ways to Deal with Emotional Abuse …

I’ve heard people argue with one another over which is worse; physical or emotional abuse. I personally think both are equally as awful. The signs of physical abuse are more easily seen on some people, but emotional abuse leaves scars as well. These scars aren’t often visible to the naked eye. If you have found yourself in a situation where emotional abuse is involved, then I hope these 7 ways to deal with emotional abuse are helpful. Feel free to pass this on to a friend who might be going through something similar as well.

7. Get out of the abusive situation when possible

I know not everyone is able to do this, due to certain circumstances between the abuser and the abused. If it is possible, then getting away from your abuser is an excellent step towards eliminating the ill effects emotional abuse is having on you.

6. Find something that makes you feel better

Maybe you are the type of person who can escape from reality through a book, music, movie, or hobby. If this is the case, then go for it! Do something to help you relax and take your mind off of the abuse. This will give you time to think about what your next step should be.

5. Understand abusers are often selective and you aren’t to blame for this

Some abuse is directed towards a person because of a past situation the abuser was in. There are also times when the abused is singled out for a reason that is only known to the abuser. For instance, maybe a parent only picks on one child in the family to emotionally abuse. Unless the parent states exactly why this child was chosen, it’s difficult to figure out the reasoning behind the abuse displayed toward one particular child and not the others.

4. Be able to identify the various forms of emotional abuse you are being exposed to

If you can indentify the ways you are being abused emotionally, then you will be able to convey this information more accurately to someone on the outside. Take note when it happens, see if you can associate the abuse with specific situations or dates, and take into account the state of the abuser at that time as well. Gather as much information as you can so you can provide it to someone who can analyze it and help you.

3. Know where it comes from

Sometimes it’s helpful to understand why someone feels the need to be abusive in the first place. Does your abuser come from an abusive family? Does the abuse only happen when alcohol or drugs are involved? Maybe you can associate the abuse with some thing specific and eliminate this item or situation, thus preventing a round of emotional abuse directed towards you.

2. Share your thoughts with a close friend

Talking with a friend about what happened or keeps happening is a great way for you to de-stress about the situation. This will also give you a chance to get feedback on how you are feeling about the abuse and maybe even some ideas on what you can do to make it stop.

1. Talk with a counselor

Licensed counselors have been trained to help people deal with various problems they are going through. These individuals are available in schools, online, and at the other end of a toll-free number. It never hurts to see if he/she can give you a suggestion or two on what to do to remedy your current situation.
Whether you or someone you care about is dealing with emotional abuse, putting a stop to it as soon as possible is the ultimate goal. There’s no reason for it to go on any longer. Do you find any of these 7 ways to deal with emotional abuse helpful?
