Trending Now: Lady Gaga Gets Nude …

Of all the topics trending today throughout the social media universe, Lady Gaga’s Harper’s Bazaar cover is probably making the most waves. When you’ve clothed yourself in meat, rocked the house in drag, and made yourself into a mermaid, what style choices can you possibly make that will cause people to stand up and take notice? Whether you’re a proud little monster, an anti-Gaga hater, or on the fence about the new Queen of Pop, you have to admit that she somehow always manages to take it to the next level.

This time, Gaga’s gone naked – and people care less about the fact that she’s not wearing clothes in her new high fashion spread. What’s really taken this topic to trending status is the fact that Gaga, who evidently showers in high heels and always has impeccable, albeit often bizarre, makeup, has gone completely fresh faced.
What does it say, however, when you’ve gotten so wild and outrageous that the public is completely blasé about your nudity? “Oh,” all the media outlets are saying, “we’ve seen Gaga naked before, that’s really no big deal.” And it’s true. Gaga goes naked all the time. You may or may not approve – your choice, and whatever you believe is cool – but even if she’s only doing it for the publicity, I still have respect for anyone who’s so comfortable with her body. I’m sure a lot of it is for publicity, but even though I’m not a super fan (I’m like a semi-monster, a monsterette), I believe Gaga when she says she likes to be natural like that, and more power to her.

But for as comfortable as she is with her body, she’s never been that comfortable about her face. When you have haters calling you ugly, hideous, saying you look like a man, or worse, on a daily basis, I can understand that. Call me crazy, when I don’t like an artist, I just say I don’t like them rather than remarking on their looks – and anyway, again, I think there’s something beautiful in everyone. Still, I think everyone can agree that Gaga’s willingness to be naked on camera has never quite parsed with her insistence on full face makeup, not to mention accessories that largely cover up her face.

I don’t know about you, but I bet that it took a lot of bravery on her part to decide to go fresh faced. She’s baring herself to her fans, which is no doubt easier, but she’s also baring herself to all those haters who say really vile things about her everyday, for no other reason than they don’t like her songs or her style or her messages.  I think she looks beautiful without makeup, possibly better without than with, and I really hope this experience allows her to believe more in her natural beauty.
But again: whether you love Lady Gaga, can’t stand her, or don’t really care about her, can’t you applaud her decision to go without makeup, and to show women – and men – everywhere that beauty doesn’t come from cosmetics?

Sound off, y’all. Give me the good, bad, and the ugly. The real question: wouldn’t you like to see more celebrities bucking convention and throwing off all the designer labels and million dollar makeup? Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Thompson have started the British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League, more and more stars are speaking out against airbrushing and photoshopping, and now Gaga’s got a naked face. We could be ushering in a new era of au naturale love.
